Antibiotic-free Meat

“Antibiotic-free meat” has become another meaningless buzzphrase in the food world. However, despite the triviality of the phrase, according to a nationwide study conducted by Consumers Union, “86 percent of people said they would like to see more (legitimately) antibiotic-free meat on store shelves” (CNN).

Though the FDA’s acknowledged the risks of antibiotic overuse in the past, it’s done little to limit the practice. In response to such inaction, the Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit against the FDA. This marks the first time the FDA’s been ordered by a federal court to act on the widespread overuse of antibiotics in animal feed, an abuse that puts the effectiveness of antibiotics at risk and contributes to the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (HuffPost).

The above video offers some good perspective on the issue. It’s a little fear-based – and while we disagree with fear-based approaches, we think there’s still some useful things to glean from it.
