Earth Week kicks off this Saturday with the annual Austin Earth Day Festival at the Mueller Hangar.  Come find us and say hello!  Then on Sunday we’ll be hosting a garden workshop and workday to celebrate the garden’s three year anniversary.  Monday we honor hops and cannabis with an IPA tap takeover, talk by TX NORML Deputy Director, Jaclyn Finkel, and screening of “Reefer Madness” (viewer discretion advised).  Finally, on Earth Day itself (4/22) we co-host a benefit concert with two UT environmental groups and featuring Hops and Grain Greenhouse on tap.  Join us for one or all of these events  and celebrate Earth Day all week.

These grapes were grown in Messina Hof’s High Plains (of Texas) vineyards.

Cranberry Pistachio Energy Bites

As a zero waste business, we’re mindful of what ends up in our trash can.  One consistent culprit is the energy bar wrapper (some but not all are compostable).  Here’s an easy way to go zero waste without giving up the healthy convenience of energy bars: make your own!

  • 8 ounces (about 1 packed cup) chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 Tablespoon chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon ground flax seeds
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats (dry, not cooked)
  • 1 cup shelled pistachio nuts
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/3 cup white chocolate chips (optional)

Combine the dates, honey, chia seeds, flax seeds and salt in a food processor, and pulse until smooth and combined. You should be able to stir the mixture — if it is too thick, add in another tablespoon or two of honey.

Transfer the mixture to a large bowl, and stir in the oats, pistachios, dried cranberries, and white chocolate chips until evenly combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Once the mixture is cool (and easier to work with), use a spoon or cookie scoop to shape it into your desired size of energy balls. (1-inch diameter works well). Alternately, you can line a small baking pan with parchment paper, and press the mixture evenly into the pan, let it cool, and then cut into bars.

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. (Storing them in the refrigerator especially helps the energy bites hold their shape.)

This Week’s Produce

All non-local items are Certified Organic.
Local items come from farms with a commitment to sustainable practices.

Coffee of the Month: Barrett’s Yirgacheffe

This month’s coffee comes from a Woreda in the Gedeo Zone, Yirgacheffe located in central Ethiopia. These smaller religions are intentionally kept separate to preserve each regions specific taste. After being fairly traded to the states they fall in the hands of Barrett’s Coffee Roasters, who add a chocolatey nose and berry flavor with a slight zing.

Wunder Monday

#WunderMonday is here to stay! Through the summer months, get savings on the delicious Wunder-Pilz Kombucha every Monday. Stop in for $1 off a glass of fermented tea and feel good about all the “wunderful” things it does for your body and taste buds alike.  Hey, you might even start looking forward to Mondays!

Vendor Spotlight

Profiles of some of our favorite vendors
Third Coast Coffee Roasting Company

Third Coast Coffee was one of our earliest, most enthusiastic partners on this journey of ours.  They wholly adopted and maintained (to this day) a zero waste delivery system that other vendors have since modeled theirs after.  And, most importantly, they’re coffees are consistently rich and delicious (not to mention fair trade and organic).  This week they’re in the vendor spotlight because they’re graciously providing 100 lbs of coffee grounds and 6 bags of coffee chaff (the skin that’s shed during roasting) for this Sunday’s garden workday.  Come learn how to utilize both of these in the garden while enjoying some complimentary Frios Mio cold brew coffee.
